Held in glorious autumn weather a
dozen or so participants attended the 2010 Hands On event hosted by Richard
Vernon on 25/26 September. This was the occasion of the 50th anniversary of
Richard farming at Hall Farm and he made every effort to make it memorable.
Many examples from the owner’s very
special collection were in use and those present had the opportunity to
operate no less than six engines and a variety of implements. We were also
pleased to welcome Michael Davies’s Z7 and Howard Bolton’s BB1. As an added
interest according to Richard Fowlers 15170/1 were in steam together for the
first time since 1949 and the Fowler 4 furrow plough probably had not seen
use for about 50 years.
The traditional Saturday evening
dinner in a local pub was an enjoyable way to unwind after a strenuous day
in the field.
Club chairman Roger Hales said,
“This one of the most important things we do. It gives a unique opportunity
for members to have a chance to find out what it is like to drive the engine
or steer the plough. Very many members have benefited over the last 12 years
we have operated the Hands On. We are very grateful to Richard and his
helpers and all other members who attended to make it such a success.”
While a further event in 2011 is
not guaranteed members wishing to register an interest in the Hands On
should contact the club secretary.
