The Much Marcle Steam Rally over the weekend of 16th
and 17th July 2011 once again provided a large collection of vintage
vehicles, motor cycles, tractors and stationary engines, together with 30
engines in the steam section.
Despite a rainy start on both days, the weather
brightened by lunch time as the spectators turned up. Two fields were set
aside – one for tractor ploughing and the other for threshing and steam
ploughing.
Peter Wilson’s ‘AJAX’ (Fowler BB1 no. 15183 built in
1918) - crewed by Michael Davies, Richard Playdon and David Rimmell – teamed
up with David William’s ‘JONNY’ (Fowler BB1 15332 built in 1919) – crewed
by Steve Philips and Dick Eastwood, and Jonathan Garman provided his plough.
The rain made movement a little difficult and David’s engine had to be
fitted with spuds to make it into the field and up to the top of the hill
over the long stubble while Peter’s engine needed a couple of pulls from a
tractor to make its way along the headland at the bottom of the hill.
Altogether a very enjoyable weekend with many
interested spectators to talk to!
