Steam Plough Club - Great Challenge 2012

Plans for the 7th Great Challenge are being developed. The event is to be held on the 18th & 19th of August 2012 at Chipping Warden, Northamptonshire with kind permission of Ivan Bannister.

Competitors will be vying for The Challenge Cup, originally awarded to Robert Fowler in 1888 and donated by his grandson, Robert Pelly; the Mike Beeby Cup for the best shallow plough;  the Fowler Gold Medal for best working plough, and, the Joe Challis Trophy for best ‘enginemanship’.

Expressions of interest in participating are invited from engine and plough owners, and from those willing to provide assistance during the event.

Chipping Warden is centrally located within the UK and benefits from excellent HGV access from junction 11 of the M40 via 5 miles of the A361, or, from junction 16 of the M1 via 17 miles of the A45.

The challenge field forms part of the original World War Two air base. The site is bordered by the original airfield perimeter road which will enable loading, unloading and parking of engines, tackle and low loaders on level hard standing regardless of weather conditions. There is ample level camping / caravan space bordering the perimeter of the field on firm level ground so it will be possible for all entrants to have their accommodation close to their plot.

The field to be used is a 60 acre plot which will be divided into twelve plots of 5 acres each, the land is level and benefits from even soil conditions throughout with direct access to each plot from the perimeter road. Water will be supplied by two tractor drawn, pumped water bowsers, and coal delivered by tractor front loader as required.

A marquee will be in place for shelter, group gathering purposes, film shows, awards, etc. with real-ale on tap on Saturday evening. There will also be a sandwich van on site on both days.

Engines and tackle can be dropped off from the 11th of August onwards but the land owner would prefer caravans to be brought just prior to, and removed soon after, the event.

The Steam Plough Club has access to various ploughs and should you wish to make use of one please contact either Mark Jones or Guy Debes to discuss. For further information or to register your interest contact the secretary.
