Thanks to the generosity of Richard and Marilyn Pearce and the Goblands Gang another brilliant “Hands On” weekend took place on 18-19 August near Hadlow in Kent.

Using a variety of AA, BB and single cylinder engines the ten participants had plenty of opportunity to try the plough and cultivator as well as to drive the engines under supervision as necessary.

Starting at 9 am on the Saturday those taking part had an introduction and advice on safety before lighting up the engines and driving to the field to be worked nearby.  Saturday night was marked by a superb dinner in the engine house with Roger Luck‘s newly restored Clayton portable in steam for company.

Peter Jennings who attended the weekend added “Thanks again, John, for your part in making my day a brilliant one!  My memories of the day?  The welcome cup of coffee from Sheila, the friendly greetings from everyone,  the willingness to show and share, the welcome food and drink, the humour – various brands and characteristics!  The sounds – oh, the sounds!  Finally – my beautifully-crafted S-bend on the final furrow!  How to make it better?  Nah ... just keep it as is – not too fussy – not too big ... no public admittance.  I don’t even want blazing hot sun!”

Club chairman Roger Hales said, “This is one of the most important things we do. We are already considering running it again next year provided a suitable site can be found.  I advise members to book well in advance for a further excellent weekend’s steam cultivation.”
