YET ANOTHER BRILLIANT
“HANDS ON”

Thanks to the
generosity of David Exwood, our host, Richard Pierce, Peter Stanier and Bob
Jameson who provided engines and ploughs another brilliant “Hands On”
weekend took place on 28-29 August near Itchingfield, Sussex. This followed
on from the Great Challenge at the same site the previous weekend.
Using a variety of
AA and single cylinder engines the ten participants had plenty of
opportunity to try the plough as well as to drive the engines under
supervision as necessary.
Starting at 9 am on
the Saturday those taking part had an introduction and advice on safety
before lighting up the engines and driving to the field to be worked
nearby. Saturday night was marked by a superb dinner at the Queens Head in
nearby Barns Green.
Many of the
participants had little experience before the weekend but all agreed that it
was a highly successful and enjoyable occasion.
Club chairman Roger Hales said, “This
is one of the most important things we do. We are considering running it
again next year provided a suitable site can be found. I advise members to
book well in advance for a further excellent weekend’s steam cultivation.”
